Grab the opportunity to speak – or maybe learn – a wee bit of Irish next time you are in around Letterkenny University Hospital. Bairbre, our Language Plan Coordinator, was delighted to meet with members of the hospital management, Aisling McDonald, Evelyn Smith, Úna Cardin and Seán Murphy, to give them packs of our phrase cards and to have a chat about other possibilities to promote Irish. You will see the phrase cards in various places round the hospital and, what’s more, you will see some more phrases up on the digital screens in the hospital! You can find those phrases just below along with recordings so that you can listen to them and learn how to say them. This is your chance to speak a wee bit of Irish in the hospital and even to help others or learn from others if there are phrases you don’t know. Add to the richness of life, speak a wee bit of Irish every day!

Seo Dr Maria Papanikolou, ón Ghréig ó dhúchas taobh le ceann de na scáthláin dhigiteach. Is dochtúir comhairleach haemaiteolaíochta í. Is dalta Ghaelscoil Adhamhnáin é mac s’aici agus tá Maria i mbun ranganna Gaeilge do thosaitheoirí le Líonra Leitir Ceanainn. Tá croí s’aici istigh i dteanga, oidhreacht agus cultúr na tíre agus déanann Maria a seacht ndícheall giota Gaeilge a labhairt leis na daoine atá faoina cúram san otharlann.

Standing beside one of the digital screens is Dr Maria Papanikolou, Haematology Consultant. Maria is originally from Greece. Her son attends Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin and Maria has been going to Beginners’ Irish Lessons with Líonra Leitir Ceanainn. She is passionate about the language and the culture and tries to speak a few words of Irish to her patients.
