Lá Spraoi na Gaeilge,
A family fun day to celebrate the Irish language will take place in Letterkenny town centre on Saturday 11 May 2024 from 12:00 to 16:00. Glór na nGael is organising this event in partnership with Líonra Leitir Ceanainn. The day will provide a variety of fun Irish language activities for Irish speakers in the Northwest to spend an enjoyable afternoon together.
The event will start at 12:00 midday when Colm Feiritéar, who presents Ruaille Buaille on Highland Radio, will kick the fun off and get the craic going by officially launching the Lá Spraoi na Gaeilge.
The activities will be spread across different locations including the Library, Market Square, the Church of Ireland Hall, the Pastoral Centre Hall, the offices of Líonra Leitir Ceanainn and at Loreto’s Carpark. There will be events suitable for all age groups and the afternoon will provide an opportunity for everyone, both young and old to come together to celebrate and use the Irish language together. We encourage everyone to be ready to use whatever Irish they have while joining in with the fun. Beatha Teanga í a Labhairt!
Parking will be limited on the day close to the activity venues and people are, therefore, encouraged to use town centre car parks.
This is Teanga Tí’s third time to organise the annual Lá Spraoi na Gaeilge and we are very excited to welcome people to come, have fun and enjoy the Irish language as a family. Letterkenny, a Gaeltacht Service Town, is well known for the welcome it offers to Irish speakers with many families in the area raising their children with Irish or who have children attending a Gaelscoil. This afternoon will give all ages a chance to celebrate the language.
From start to finish there will be fun and games, music, workshops and more. There will be information stands to draw attention to Irish language services and supports available. We will have street entertainment with Giggles and Orson Sterritt, a circus skills workshop and a circus show with Stephen Mc Ginley, drama workshop with Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhrighde, a puppet show with Little Gem Puppets, storytelling with Suzanne Ní Ghallchóir, a dance workshop in traditional Irish, African dance with Tura Arutura and a lot more.
There will be a special event on the day when our special guest Seosamh Mac Seoin, a presenter with Cúla 4, will launch Clár Spraoi do Ghrúpaí Súgartha. This new publication is an à la carte activity book for play groups for children aged 0-3 which includes 120 activities across 30 themes. Written by Suzy Uí Ghallachóir from Letterkenny and who runs Na Tootsies Beaga, it will be a valuable resource for Irish language playgroups as well as families. There will be a workshop on the day with Suzy to give families a chance to try out the activities.
To top off the day, the newest game developed by Siopa Údar, Monopoly na nÓg, will be launched at the event. With sponsorship from COGG, an Irish version of this famous game is now available for children for the first time ever. It will greatly add to the wonderful range of Irish games that Siopa Údar has developed over the years and will be an excellent resource for teachers, community committees, youth clubs and families.
Should any group, Irish language organisation or Gaelscoil wish to have an information stand or host some other activity as part of the day, contact Sinéad Ní Mhearnóg Uí Ghéibheannaigh on 083 449 7443 or sinead@glornangael.ie or Bairbre Uí Chathail on 086 075 1663 or eolas@lionralc.ie
