Tá Leitir Ceanainn aitheanta mar bhaile seirbhíse Gaeltachta agus mar gheall air sin tá plean teanga faofa ag Roinn na Gaeltachta agus maoinithe ag an Roinn fríd Foras na Gaeilge. Is é an sprioc atá ag an phlean teanga seo ná úsáid na Gaeilge i gcúrsaí sóisialta, oideachais, cultúrtha agus eacnamaíochta an bhaile a spreagadh.
Ba mhaith linne i Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, pobal labhartha Gaeilge an bhaile a thabhairt le chéile agus deiseanna sóisialta a thabhairt dóibh Gaeilge a labhairt. Fosta tá sé tábhachtach dúinn go mbeadh an seans ag daoine eile atá ar bheagán Gaeilge nó gan Gaeilge ar bith, an teanga álainn seo a fhoghlaim agus faill a bheith acu ar imeachtaí sóisialta agus deiseanna cainte le scileanna teanga s’acu a fhorbairt.
Bíonn leithidí clubleabhair, ciorcal comhrá agus Pop Up Gaeltacht ar siúl againn go rialta. Eagraíonn muid féilte macasamhail Féile an Fhómhair i mí Dheireadh Fómhair achan bhliain agus An Focal Beo san earrach, nuair a chuireann muid béim ar leith ar scéalaíocht, oidhreacht, siamsaíocht agus cruthaitheacht. Ag am Nollaig bíonn ócáid Daidí na Nollag againn do pháistí an bhaile.
Níl plean gan phobal. Cuireann Líonra Leitir Ceanainn béim ollmhór ar obair forbartha pobail. Bíonn muid ag obair le teaghlaigh agus déanann muid iarracht iad a thabhairt le chéile go míosúil go mbeidh deis acu bualadh lena chéile, craic agus spraoi a bheith acu agus go mbeidh deis ag na páistí an Ghaeilge a chloisteáil taobh amuigh den seomra ranga – rud atá riachtanach.
Tá muid i gcónaí ag iarraidh deiseanna a thabhairt do dhéagóirí an bhaile pleananna dá gcuid féin a fhorbairt agus a chur i gcrích agus tá muidne in Líonra Leitir Ceanainn sásta maoiniú agus tacaíocht a thabhairt daofa.
Bíonn ranganna Gaeilge ar siúl againn do leibhéil éagsúla líofachta – ó dhaoine nach bhfuil oiread agus focal Gaeilge acu go daoine ar mhaith leo saibhreas teanga a fhorbairt. Bíonn muid ag obair le Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin, le Coláiste Ailigh, le Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Dhún na nGall agus le heagraíochtaí agus gnólachtaí áitiúla chun na ranganna seo a chur ar fáil.
Bíonn Líonra Leitir Ceanainn ag obair go dlúth le gnólachtaí an bhaile. Cuireann muid an scéim tacaíochta gnó de chuid Fhoras na Gaeilge agus scéim GRADAIM de chuid Glór na nGael chun cinn agus bíonn go leor de ghnólachtaí an bhaile ag iarraidh páirt a ghlacadh achan bhliain. Bíonn muid ag comhoibriú le Cumann Tráchtála Leitir Ceanainn agus tugann muid tacaíocht do ghnólachtaí, ag cur aistriúcháin ar fáil, agus ag eagrú ranganna Gaeilge do dhaoine ar mhaith leo tuilleadh Gaeilge a labhairt san ionad oibre. Bíonn oibrí na míosa againn chomh maith.
Tá Líonra Leitir Ceanainn lonnaithe i lár an bhaile, 7 Sráid an Chaisleáin, Leitir Ceanainn. Is féidir bualadh isteach againn le leabhar a fháil ar iasacht ó leabharlann s’againn, cártaí agus earraí Gaeilge a cheannach, le freastal ar imeacht dár gcuid nó díreach le comhrá agus comhairle a lorg maidir le seirbhísí Gaeilge an bhaile.
Is muidne Líonra Leitir Ceanainn. Cruthaigh spás don Ghaeilge.
Letterkenny is recognised as a Gaeltacht service town, and as a result, a language plan has been approved by the Department of the Gaeltacht and funded by the Department through Foras na Gaeilge. The aim of this language plan is to encourage the use of Irish in the social, educational, cultural, and economic affairs of the town.
At Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, we want to bring together the Irish-speaking community of the town and provide social opportunities for them to speak Irish. It is also important to us that people who have little or no Irish have the chance to learn this beautiful language and participate in social activities and speaking opportunities to develop their language skills.
We regularly hold activities such as book clubs, conversation circles, and Pop Up Gaeltachts. Every year, we organise festivals like Féile an Fhómhair in October and An Focal Beo in the spring, where we place a special emphasis on storytelling, heritage, entertainment, and creativity. At Christmas time we hold our annual Daidí na Nollag event for the children of the town.
A plan without community is no plan at all. Líonra Leitir Ceanainn places a huge emphasis on community development work. We work with families and try to bring them together monthly so they can meet, have fun, and give children the opportunity to hear Irish outside the classroom—something essential.
We are constantly striving to provide opportunities for the town’s teenagers to develop and execute their own plans, and we at Líonra Leitir Ceanainn are happy to offer funding and support for them.
We run Irish classes for various levels of fluency—from people who don’t know a word of Irish to those who want to develop their language richness. We work with Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin, Coláiste Ailigh, Donegal Education and Training Board, and local organisations and businesses to make these classes available.
Líonra Leitir Ceanainn works closely with the town’s businesses. We promote Foras na Gaeilge’s business support scheme and Glór na nGael’s GRADAIM scheme, with many businesses in the town looking to take part each year. We collaborate with the Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce and support businesses by providing translations and organising Irish classes for those who want to speak more Irish in the workplace. We also have an Employee of the Month scheme.
Líonra Leitir Ceanainn is located in the town centre, 7 Castle Street, Letterkenny. You can drop in to borrow a book from our library, buy Irish-language cards and items, attend one of our events, or simply have a chat and seek advice about the town’s Irish-language services.
